Super 15’s: (round 18)

The Tah’s continued their ‘weird’ form this season and convincingly smashed the Brumbies 41-7 in an almost inconclusive manner. Shouldering a stale, nay conservative style the NSW outfit are veritable try machines. Waugh grinds the breakdowns and Burgess snipes as an extra flank forward then Kurtley finds space that isn’t there and suddenly they’ve got a couple of tries on the board. Giant lock, Sitaleki Timani shone this week in the lineout, which doubled as planking when he stretched over for a score. He also took out two props in Al Baxter from his side and Ben Alexander from the Brumbies with perfectly timed head buts. Super sub Chris Alcock then came on to score within 90 seconds leaving seven defenders in his wake. As Waugh said afterwards, ‘I think we can beat anyone we play against.’ – I think he may be right/ Reds continued with their injury list, adding James Slipper and is doubtful for their July 2nd semi against Stormers at Suncorp. Young lad Liam Gill stood out here with the only try for the Reds in a 19-11 win over the Chiefs/ Fred Michalak stood out for the Sharks win over Bulls 26-23. His quick passing and unpredictability at fly half proved he is probably at step up from wonder kid Patrick Lambie who was moved to fullback. The best try came from a blindside wing break from JP Pieterson to set up aged skipper Stefan Terblance to score. Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Fourie du Preez all played their last games for the Pretorian’s, and could you think of any bigger names to don the Bulls jersey?/ Crusaders only try came from Robert Fruean in the 43rd minute, whilst Andrew Hore and Ma’a Nonu played their last games for ‘Canes, amidst heckles of outcry from devotees. The Crusaders snatched 16-9/ Blues beat Highlanders 33-16 and will face the Tah’s at Eden park on Friday/ Rebels went down to the Mighty Force 24-17/ And Cheetahs fell 34-44 short of the Stormers.

So to re-cap; Tah’s play Blues at Eden park/ Sharks play Crusaders in Nelson and Reds play Stormers at Suncorp – and as bloke in the pub asked me how that works, like then I’ll be buggered if I know – I think the first two games are still play-offs, whilst Reds and Stormers is the only official semi!?

Churchill Cup

The Saxons beat Canada 37-6 to mark the end of this development comp for fringe nations, as both Canada and USA have been ear marked on the Test agenda.

The Canadian’s, ranked 15th in the IRB standings were hard to grind down and are a nuggety, well organised team, but once the first try from James Gaskell came mid way through the first half, two more from Benjamin and one a piece from Sharples and Gibson were quick to follow.

Italy ‘A’ beat Tonga in the plate 28-17 and USA beat Russia in the bowl 32-25.

fool says:

Having put my cheeky tenner on Crusaders for the Super’s, I might add a shy fiver on Tah’s to beat Blues on Friday at Eden Park – possible? – Anything is possible.

Some shorts:

*Mike Philipps awaits his fate from his bosses after a row with McDonalds bouncers following a kafuffle at 3a.m. in Wales, which doesn’t surprise the fool as just this weekend locals in a pub in Wales pulled a gun on bar staff after being told to order in English and not Welsh, as they didn’t understand. – Mike’s off to Bayonne after the World Cup – I wonder if they have bouncers on the door at McDonald’s there?

*Christian Cullen has joined the who-ha surrounding Hore and Nonu’s release from Hurricane’s, stating they’ll regret their decision after Nonu has a massive season and turn round to themselves saying, ‘Why did we let him go.’ – Christian Cullen could bench press more than the forwards when he was playing – he is probably fool’s No.1 fullback – bigger than Serge! Andrew Hore in the meantime is going back to farming or real estate to be precise, as land prices take a hike – bloke’s loaded.

*Brumbies boss Tony Rea has confirmed the Git is a grumpy bastard who’s hard to get on with, but in regards to his commitment in training and playing ability is in ore, ‘I have never seen anything like him.’ – Still looks like a 14 year-old girl.

*As England names their 45 man training squad for the World Cup lots of talk has been focussed around Mouritz Botha’s inclusion, as well as, Thomas Waldrom, who just found an English grand parent, not to mention English educated lifetime stayer Manu Tuilaga,, then there’s of course Matt Stevens, Riki Flutey, Hendrie Fourie, Shontayne Hape and Brad Barritt – these have all got to make it to the 30, but in terms of overseas nationals qualifying – it’s not something new – the Kiwis and Aussies have been recruiting Specific islanders for years, as the Scots and Welsh have Kiwis and the South Africans Aussies, but one team that sticks out who I believe have only ever bred their own are the Irish – please correct me if I’m wrong.

A willow the wisp of cricket now:

And now ladies and gentlemen a thribble on the light side:

Jimmy ‘Swinger’ was back at the Rose Bowl on Day 1 with two wickets and a sack ful of inspirations for his tall mates.

Tremlett especially, as he finished on 2-18 in 16 overs as the Srills slid to 81-4 in a rain soaked day which managed only 38 overs.

Day 3 wasn’t much better, but KP found his form at last with a stylish 85 that put England 195-5 and 11 ahead.

Cook past 50 for the 6th time in 6 straight Tests, but the man everyone is watching is Bell, who’s day 4 contribution rattled to 119*, which puts his summer average on 331 so far – that’s 103*, 52, 57* and 119*

England declared on 377-8 – 193 ahead with Sri Lankan coach Stuart Law admitting, ‘Ian Bell is fast becoming a pain in the back side.’

Wrapped for time but just enough to tell you the Srills pulled off a draw with a cracking119 from Sangakkara and 87 from Thilan Samaraweera.

It’s early now and… - I’m done

The team that likes roll mops and partying and belts and rum and temptations and feathers and Steve Finn and proverbs and coordinates and pigeons and tiddly winks and Jessie’s! And spin and the Beatles and Buddy Holly and side-show Bob and Ant and Dec and capes and japes and basketball and indoor cricket and psyche and a good rib-dig and loose ends and first balls and a good roasting, and triple tons and whoa-ha-ha’s and cooking and cradles and Yorkshire puddings…and 2010/11 Ashes, and the Gods

Till next week…
