RWC 2011 New Zealand
Wales were just too good for Ireland as too France’s first half that annihilated England, but how in the wide, wide world of sports did Australia win and New Zealand’s scoreline was flattering to say the least.
Wales toppled Ireland 22-10 with an early try from the wee maestro Shane Williams. A lapse in defence to let the big man Jonathan Davies through the centre and a superb solo try from 6ft 2inch scrum half Mike Philips.
If you thought that’s what won them the game – think again; their back row is awesome and in defence they never missed a tackle.
England went down 19-12 to a revitalised les Bleus, with two early tries from Clerc and Medard and at 16-0 Foden’s catch up try in the second half was always going to be that.
Vietnamese lad Trinh-Duc dropped a goal and stretched their lead with a Cueto score in the death just as a consolation.
Forget the who-ha about this miss-firing England side, because there were flashes of brilliance, alas all could be counted on one hand, and bar the Welsh, who else can use both hands in this tournament so far?
England were poor, but Australia were no better and managed to stall, nay halt a marauding Bok machine that fumbled and spilt it’s way to the line more times than England. Of course a lot of that goes down to some last ditch desperation tackles from the Wallabies, which is all well and good, but credit must go to O’Connor, Horwill and Pocock who kept them in the game and ultimately the semis.
New Zealand definitely looked as if their dog collar was itching and when Julio Faras went over in the corner of the first half, it suddenly looked like goodnight Vienna.
The Blacks muscled back, kept their cool and ran in some good tries, thanks largely to a relentless Jerome Keano. Aaron Cruden did well in place of Slade, but he’ll never beat their Christmas No.1
fool says:
Wales will whip France and New Zealand will sneak past the Wallabies.
