Super 15’s: (final)
Reds rugby; like ‘em or loathe ‘em, they’ve got belief. – will that drag the Wallabies through a Tri-Nations series I’m not sure but on recent evidence you’d have to say, ‘Why not’.
Suncorp Stadium came to the fore of sporting epitome when a record crowd of 52,113 turned out to see their beloved Reds pip the marauding, if not slightly battle worn Crusaders 18-13.
Well, what do you expect when you’ve been on the road for the whole tournament, covering no less that 100, 000 miles on route, but then, that’s the Crusaders for you, they didn’t store the Holy Grail by sitting at home, but saying that they didn’t capture it this time round either. They made, as McCaw pointed out, ‘One or two mistakes’, which overall you can forgive them for, because as great a side as they are, there was one component the Reds edged them on and that was fate – make your own fate? Maybe, but fate was on the Reds’ side in this tournament, but of course fate doesn’t come without reason.
The Reds’ fate came from a work rate stemmed from defence. After taking a battering in the first half - that finished with a piece of individual brilliance from DC who put the Big ‘C’s’ ahead 7-6, but alas, there was where they left any consistency.
The Reds charged into the second half with a well executed try from Digby and with what Will Genia called that, ‘self belief’. However, I’m not quite sure he could believe it when he broke past McCaw, who over stepped his mark at a break down and suddenly the wee-man was in the parting of the Crusaders Sea, and not knowing whether to pass left or right he just kept on going, ‘I didn’t think I was that quick’, he said after he’d touched down for the winning score and with it brought the Queenslander’s fate to a fitting close.
Or was it just one beard too many from the Crusaders?
fool says:
South Africa will win the Tri-Nations – bet you weren’t expecting that.
Some shorts:
*The Wallabies will be buoyed by the Reds total of no less than 15 in their squad, but none more so that veteran 35 year-old Radike Samo who makes it into the 40 man squad for the Tri-Nations and Samoa game – will the loosey get a game? Yes. Will he make the WC squad? Yes. Is the fool a fool? Yes
*Meanwhile the All Blacks have only introduced one newby for their squad in the T-N’s and Fiji warm up game – and it’s not Craig! But, Jarrad Hoeta. Other surprises are Colin Slade in favour of Aaron Cruden and no Joe I-should-coko.
*Stormers loosey Francois Louw is off to Bath, whilst Bokkie skipper will land at Saracens after the World Cup, but will have to play second fiddle to current hooker Schalk Brits who hasn’t even made the Bok squad.
*Benn Robinson is out of the World Cup with a knee problem – and that’s all you need to know about that or anything else this week – not even a mention of
Tri-Nation dark horses

A willow the wisp of cricket now:

And now ladies and gentlemen a thribble on the light side:

Let’s keep with a wee thribble on full throttle and just mention the bare necessities of the highlights this week that comprised of England’s 3-2 win over the Srills, Aussies sticking up for their mates and India’s first Test win series in Windie-land.
Cook, the ‘plodder’, put 95 on against the Srills at Old Trafford to help England win with 24 overs spare and square the series 2-2. Riding on 66 Kieswetter asked if he should hold back to let his captain hit his ton – Cook said go for it and he promptly smashed a six. ‘Bastard’ said Cook
The final game at Trent Bridge went down to the wire with Trott and Morgan steadying the ship on 72 and 57 respectively, as the Srills big guns in Dilshan and Jayewardene wilted on 4 and 9 leaving Angelo Matthews to pluck a respectable 62 before Jade Dernbach caught him with a slow ball and England won by 11 runs.
Over in the Dominican the first two days saw 97 overs unplayed due the rain, however, Ishant Sharma nabbed five wickets and Harbhajan Singh snared his 400th.
India ran into D3 with 308-6 on a 103 lead with 50’s from Abhinav Mukund, WS Laxman, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni kebab.
In an unlikely turn around the Windies stubbornly held on for the draw as India needed just 86 before time ran out.
In a triangular series in Zimbabwe Australia ‘A’ pipped South Africa thanks to double centuries from David Warner and Philip Hughes and edged past the Proteans 291 total in 50 overs with 293-6.
Meanwhile the Aussie players and management had a meeting to discuss the furore that still surrounds Katich’s omittence from a central contract, revealing all is now out in the open, grievances were shared and reasons given. What exactly they were we don’t know, but Clarke is at least happy that players will not have to, ‘look over our shoulders’ anymore, and the crux of the meeting was to air opinions and, ‘stick up for your mates.’
-Which is especially not the case for Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi who will never play for Pakistan again as long as boss Ijaz Butt is in charge.
Butt firmly believes it was Afridi’s fault Pakistan lost the 4th and 5th ODI in Windie-land to ultimately lose the series – due to his lack of concern and heir of total apathy, which is a little like being energetically lazy.
Surely I’m done here.
It’s early now and… - I’m done
The team that likes roll mops and partying and belts and rum and temptations and feathers and Steve Finn and proverbs and coordinates and pigeons and tiddly winks and Jessie’s! And spin and the Beatles and Buddy Holly and side-show Bob and Ant and Dec and capes and japes and basketball and indoor cricket and psyche and a good rib-dig and loose ends and first balls and a good roasting, and triple tons and whoa-ha-ha’s and cooking and cradles and Yorkshire puddings…and 2010/11 Ashes, and the Gods
Till next week…
