The rugby bit:

Heineken Cup;
Leinster 33-22 Northampton
If Judgement Day didn’t emerge triumphant for thousands of global supporters then it did for the Blues at Cardiff’s Millennium.
Down 16 points at half time, Leinster were on the back foot in all facets of the game. The Saints dominance in the scrum set the stage for tries from Phil Dowson, Ben Foden and Dylan Hartley just before the half time whistle.
Then what has been described as ‘sensational’, ‘phenomenal’ and ‘inspired’ by Jonny Sexton the Irish turned on the gas as the English ran out of puff.
Leinster notched 27 points in 25 minutes with Jonny snagging two tries and Nathan Hines powering over for the third.
In a half time speech delivered from the 26 year-old fly half Jonny urged the Blues to dig deep and take heed of Liverpool’s gigantic effort in the European Cup a couple of years ago when they were 3-0 down and went on to win.
B.O’D was blown away by his speech and subsequent control of the game, saying, ‘Johnny was a man possessed. I haven’t seen a second half performance like that – ever.’
Perhaps he was possessed – by an apocalyptic urgency to nab Leinster 2nd triumph in as many years.
Super 15’s: (round 14)
A late Schalk Burger try with a touch line conversion gave Stormers the edge over the Blues in Auckland – 28-26/ DC guided Crusaders to a 25-19 win over Chiefs in Napier. The Chiefs were never in it in the second half and when Luke Romano brushed off three tackles to score under the posts you got the impression no Leinster fairytale was on the cards/ Tahs played a mammoth first half against Lions in Sydney, full of flare, bravado and pace then sat back on their lead at 29-5 to kick the ball for the rest of the afternoon, as Lions clawed back to 29-12/ Bulls beat Sharks 32-23 in Durban/ Cheetah’s notched their fourth successive win with a 41-21 rout over the Rebels in Bloemfontein/ And the Mighty Force and Brumbies drew 13 each. Mind you, brumbies boss Tony Rea was more than pleased with this week’s performance and gave credit where credit was due, ‘Listen, if people asked me to be honest last week, I have to be honest this week – yes (I am satisfied), we left nothing out there.’ – he was also adamant it was The Git’s speech the night before that rallied his side and not something that he could have said or been taken notice of to spur a side that has been nothing short of shite this season. But the Git’s no Johnny ‘Luther’ Sexton obviously.
Aviva Premiership;
Leister take on Sarries on Saturday at Twickenham – should be a cracker, however, without ‘Rocky’ Tuilaga I’m now backing Sarries to pull it off.
Sarries bosses can’t decide which world class scrum half to use in Richard Wigglesworth and Neil de Kock, so the players came up with a solution – they’re going to toss for it.
Magners:
- why am I still on this page?
Dunno, but I do know following Leinster’s win in the HC means that Connaught will finally qualify for the Heineken next season – the only Magner’s side not to have made an appearance yet!
Top 14:
Dunno
Amlin Challenge Cup
Quins beat Stade Francais 19-18 with a last gasp touch conversion from Nicky Evans following Danny Care’s break and boot ahead for wing Gonzalo Camacho to chase and score.
fool says:
Force are without O’Connor but snap Cameron Shepherd back, and their trip to Palmerston North to take on the ‘Canes in their back garden is just that… a big back garden, because fool’s been there, and there ain’t much. Either way, who would bet against the ‘Canes…/ yep, fool
Some shorts:
*Shaun Edwards is heading back to Wigan and of course league, which coupled with Clive Woodward’s snub of England’s performance director job due to high incompetence in its management level, makes you wonder whether union is taking a spiralled fall to tabloid back pages for all the wrong reasons.
Shaun’s spell at Wales will end after the World Cup. His previous spell at Wasps earned them four league titles, two Heineken Cup’s and one Anglo-Welsh Cup. He signed at Wigan on his 17th birthday for a then record of £35k – played 469 times from 1983-’97 and amassed 1,140 points. He also turned out 36 times for Great Britain and a few more for England. Recorded 43 unbeaten cup ties – 8 RL championships and 9 Challenge Cups – you’d think he’d just buy a bungalow and a fishing rod eh!
Meanwhile Clive’s happy to stay with the British Olympic Association as director of sport because the current RFU boss Mr Steele has fanny-ied around with rugby’s top job so much, that one minute it entails being over-see-er of all sides then just the juniors, that Clive has had to say enough is enough, ‘when you make your minds up, come and talk to me.’
*Meanwhile bookies (Ladbrokes) have Manu Tuilaga ½ to make the World Cup squad, evens to score, 33/1 to get a yellow, 250/1 to be sent off, 6/1 for him and Ashton to score in the same match and 50/1 to be the top scorer.
*England Saxons take on the Baa Baa’s this Sunday at Twickenham and Ugo Monye’s been held a lifeline for the England squad, as too has Dave Attwood, who missed out on the Six Nations due to a 9-week ban for stamping – good to have a Dave back in the squad.
Tripping the light fantastic for the Barbarians will be; Mathieu Bastereaud, Frederick Michalek, Joe van Niekerk, Carl Hayman, Martyn Williams and Sergio Parisse.
*’I should’ Rokocoko’s off to Bayonne – confirmed. He’s only 27, can you believe that! In his first 12 Tests for the Oil Slick he scored 17 tries.
*Elsom wants in for captaincy for the Wallabies, but an ankle syndesmosis may have other plans. It looks likely he’ll be out for the rest of the Super rugby, and anyway, Tim Horan reckons Will Genia or James Horwill will do a better job, let alone Pocock being their ‘spiritual leader’
