On the pond February 08
G’day anglers, and other purveyors of the piscatorial species.
Fishman here with a look at what’s happening on the pond.
A lot of rum has passed these gums since the last time I updated the going on of those on the pond.
You may have seen a summary of the Big V fishing trip, which was a goodun.
Indeed a good time was had by all and sundry, and as I recall sundry caught the biggest fish, the most fish, and drank the most beer.
The lads had a good shanty goin too, although it wasn’t as good as my favourite,
“Cape Cod Girls”
You know the one?
Cape Cod girl’s aint got no combs;
Haul away, haul away.
They comb their hair with cod fish bones.
Haul away me hearty lads.
Where to eat drink and be merry
A lot has changed on the restaurant scene on the island.
The German Biergarten has had a change of owners, and a name change.
It’s now called SUNSET, and Vietnamese food has been added to the standard fare of Snags and Schnitzel.
Louis is your host.
THE HOP INN has hopped off the island; Maurie and Veronica were just snagged by the fact that they had to teach their staff the same thing day after day.
It was by far the busiest noshery on the island with punters lining up to get a table.
This was due to either Maurie’s mastery of the Kim Hai beef on the bbq, or the fact that every punter got a kiss from the host and hostess on the way in!
It is currently under Vietnamese ownership, and they’ve changed the name to Rock Inn.
The fashion cafe has changed its name to ANH THU
This is only temporary as due to the fact that they have by far the best Pizza on the island it will soon be called something like Dominos.
Norberto is the host and reports that soon he will add imported beef and lamb to compliment his big salads.
Apparently some people come to the island to partake in seafood, and there is plenty to go around. The best places to try it are ZEN in the city, and PALM TREE, and
LE DEAUVILLE on the beach.
For the best fish and chips try THE BEACH CLUB
Mike is a pom and knows his fish and fadukies.
Bit of bait
I overheard a couple of blokes fishing off the rocks the other day, and as one bloke was pulling in a nice 2 kilo coral trout, he says to his mate “Ireland is an island isn’t it” his mate said “I’m not sure, but I reckon it might be “So the first bloke says “well when they ran out of spuds, why didn’t they just eat the fish”?
Fishing news

The guys at Bluewater Fishing have been getting some good sized Perch between 800gm’s and a kilo off Turtle Island recently and are still hooking some nice Cobia off Cua Lap.
A Kiwi on a 6 month holiday has been fishing the rocks in front of the 1,000 stars hotel and took some good sized coral trout, on a spinner he made out of a coffee spoon.
Kiwi bloke said the best time to catch em, is 12 hours after the moon reaches its Zenith.

Other bites
Now that the TET is over it’s actually possible for foreigners to get on and off the pond.
The new airport has been delayed; rumour has it that the existing runway may be upgraded.
Doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.
Roads still not made.
No horse or dog track yet.
No golf courses.
Keep ya lines tight, and only catch what someone can eat!
