Well the games on the field are over for 2007 but the games off the field continue in more ways than one.
Partying by players continues and will so for a couple of weeks for the Grand Final combatants. Other clubs however are about to return to training in preparation for the 2008 season. The other games that are being played at the moment are the trade games where club recruiters and coaching staff have all week been negotiating and talking who is going where, who wants who and how do we manipulate the talks to suit our own best needs.
The complex world of trade week is interesting. We all know that Chris Judd wants to go to Carlton and that Carlton Carlton do not want to give up their number one draft pick something that West Coast would love. The trade could involve up to 5 clubs even though the Blues and the Weagles still insist it will be between the 2 clubs. want him but how does he get there.
Frankly, draft week is a joke and too long as most of the deals will be done in the last few minutes before the 2.00pm cut off tomorrow. Next week Digger will have a full list of the trades and we will all see then where some of our favourite players will play next season.
Three father/son deals have already been completed with a young Donohue going to the Cats, a young Barham going to the ‘Pies and another Danaher off to Bomber land.
Dean Laidley should be resigned at the Kangaroos today and why it has taken so long is a mystery. In the meantime Carlton have approached Laidley with an assistants job that would pay just as much as his senior coach gig with the ‘Roos. That is even after Carlton chairman Richard Pratt was this week fined $40 million AUD for colluding on price fixing over the cost of carton boxes.
Gary Ablett Jr., has taken out the Geelong Best and Fairest award over Brownlow Medalist Jimmy Bartel. Go young Gazza.
That is about all the news from Digger this week, a slow week in AFL circles but the show will go on.
Digger will join Trigger having a punt over the next few weeks but rest assured that your weekly AFL news will continue each and every week throughout the off season and more fun and games are sure to rear their head.
