Grand Final wrap up
October, 05th 2006 03:47 AM

What an absolutely terrific game to end the season on.  It had just about everything, let's go on a time line of the day.

Pre-game.  A batch of all time Aussie rock'n'roll greats.  Brian Mannix has been on the botox and Joe Camilleri has not aged all that well.

Roger Merrett fired the crowd at the legend up and everyone starting grazing the buffet.  Digger thought the lamb chops were delightful.

First Quarter.  Before the ball was bounced there was the usual argy bargy and pushing, shoving and jumper punching and all thoughts were on who could start best.  The Swans had the shakes and fumbled a lot with Ben Matthews dropping a shonky handball allowing the Weagles to score.  The West Coast showed their usual aplomb.  At quarter time it looked like how far West Coast.  The Swans had missed 4 set shots for goal.

Second Quarter.  The Sydney outfit still looked a bit rattled but started to find a bit of touch.  West Coasts Embley, however, kicked the first goal of the term to give his team a 21 point lead.  Quentin Lynch kicked two majors for the quarter and West Coast led by 25 points.

Half Time.  Led by Jimmy Hey, the raffle ticket sellers out did themselves and by hunting the packs actually ran out of tickets.  Dispute raged into the wee hours as to whether Pago or Watto sold the most tickets.  Big Roger told us not to write off the Swans.

Third Quarter.  The Sydney team seemed to be putting their act together and now placed some pressure on the Weagles.  Co captain Brett Kirk had a great term and was well supported by Nic Fosdike and Essendon reject Ted Richards.  When Nick Davis goaled just before the lemon break West Coast led only 11 points.

Final Quarter.  Brownlow medalist Adam Goodes goaled within 13 seconds of the bounce and it was game on.  The Eagles were hanging onto a 1 point lead at the 23 minute mark and when a Daniel Chick smother turned the ball over and allowed Adam Hunter to kick a goal it looked like the Weagles were home.  Malceski goaled for the Swans and then Richards stormed forward again.  Again it was Chick who put the pressure on and Ted's kick went out of bounds on the full.  SIREN and the first 1 point Grand Final win since St. Kilda beat Collingwood in 1966.

After game.  Swans wept and Weagles whooped and hollered.  Andrew Embley won the Norm Smith Medal and we discovered that Ben Cousins is still the real captain of his team.  Controversy followed when some fans were aggrieved that not all the West Coast players shook the hand of the kid presenting the medals (boy some people are soft).  At the Legend the auctions rolled on until the only dickhead for the day thought he could do a better job.  Sanity prevailed and we got rid of him.

Back to Vasco's where all and sundry rock and rolled and Thanh "Eddie" Charles displayed his dexterity on the drums.  By 9.00pm big Roger had a case of the Saigon shits and retired for the night.  And finally, Digger's alter ego had his latest night out since last years Grand Final.

The SARFC has asked me to pass on their thanks to all the sponsors of last Saturdays Foster's AFL Grand Final Brunch and to all those who attended.  Everyone who attended has asked me to pass on their thanks to the guest for the day, Roger Merrett, who was an absolute super star.

And guys don't worry, Digger will still be with you during the off season with team reviews and other news and then it will be time to kick off season 2007.

What a game!

Digger
