A few teams over the years have been accused of playing like old women. Geelong have been taunted for many years about carrying handbags. Well the A.F.L. has gone one step further and made this weeks round the "Women's Round". The fairer sex apparently make up 36% of club members and 40% of viewers of the game on television. This week we also celebrate Mothers Day and from memory the A.F.L. in conjunction with health groups will also be letting the public aware of breast cancer. Well good luck to all the mum's out there as well as all females who enjoy the game. Digger has met quite a few BFM's in his time and also wishes them all the best.
Diggers celebration of the Women's Round coincides with the unusual occurrence in the CFN/BG tipping competition.
LETTER(S) OF THE WEEK
Andrea from London (currently in HCMC) writes,
Digger,
Alright you Aussies! It seems you have to be an English female to get on top of this one. Having lived in Vietnam for almost 6 years I've watched 2 AFL grand finals, the odd game here and there, I know a couple of players names and am never sure which part of Oz the Kangaroos come from. I may not be number 1 non-celeb for very long but am extremely proud I made it for one week! My tip to the tipsters - history's yesterday's game!
Andrea
Yes folks that is correct! Andrea is numero uno in the tipping comp. and shares the lead with Pearlman and Flea, two of our experts who are unable to share in the cash prizes. Come on you tipsters, we cannot be beaten by a sheila let alone a pommy one. The Kangaroos were originally North Melbourne but play all over the shop. The tip is that they may very well become the Southport Kangaroos in the not too distant future.
Digger mail bag has been full to over flowing this week and our second selected letter this week comes from,
David from Applecross writes,
Digger you mongrel,
You seem to be biased against all things Western Australian.
David
Thanks for your lovely letter David. I am biased against all things everywhere and do not keep my wicked ramblings and accusations against those from the lovely state of Western Australia or the beautiful city of Perth. Please remember that he who reacts the hardest is normally the most guilty.

Last weeks rivalry round was a tough one for the tipsters. Over in lovely Perth, the Fremantle Dockers handed out the Weagles first defeat for the year. The best player in this match is awarded the Ross Glendinning medal and this years winner was Weagle, Chris Judd. Glendinning was then spat on by Fremantle supporters who thought Docker Josh Carr should have received the award.
Geelong's season just keeps going from bad to worse. The Cats had a substantial lead over Melbourne given the miserable conditions at the ‘G yet still found a way to lose. Geelong will be further hindered this week as the human brain explosion, Cameron Mooney, has received a one match suspension for a non deliberate head butt. As ABC Asia pacific reported, stupidity is no defence at the tribunal.
St. Kilda bounced back from their draw/loss of the previous round with a solid win over the Western Bulldogs. Big Fraser Gehrig had a day out after his brain explosion of the previous week. Gee, Nick Dal Santo is a good player. Watched this game on Saturday and thought it was hilarious. Counting down from the 11 minute mark of the third term, umpire Steve Mc Blurry paid three absolutely incorrect decisions, reversed the 3rd one, then shepherded the Bulldog player and paid an incorrect 50 meter penalty. Was it against himself. Still counting down, this ended at the 8.35 minute mark. Great stuff.
Richmond had a close win over the Bombers in the Dreamtime game that celebrated the games indigenous players. Digger thought it was the Rivalry round. In an extraordinary second quarter, the 2 teams combined to kicked a very inaccurate 1 goal 17 behinds. Reminds me of a quote from young Cody L. who has just taken up cricket as a bowler. He said "when I learn to bowl straight my accuracy will improve".
The Ravens absolutely smacked the Powerless in their local derby and really look good. Look out for the Porplyzia kid. Could be a champion! Brisbane was rolled again this time by Sydney and now sit at the bottom of the ladder. Lethal Leigh Matthews must be under the pump. "Good old Collingwood forever" is being sung with gusto throughout the land. The ‘woods sit on top of the ladder and seemingly are traveling well. Let us hope that sanity prevails soon. Carlton led this game by 2 points at half time and then went into a football coma.
In the final game, Nathan Thompson vindicated his decision to take himself off with 5 minutes to go last round with a match winning 8 goals in the Kangaroos win over Hawthorn. Credit where credit is due. All down hill from now for the hawks.
Former Brownlow medal winner, Bernie "Superboot" Quinlan has labeled Giansiracusa's hit on Justin Kosnichke as dangerous and something that should be scrapped from the game. He has a few supporters. While unfortunate that there was a clash of heads that resulted in a fractured skull for Kosnichke it was a legitimate bump. It was a hip and shoulder by a little man on a big man with the little man shepherding his team mate who had the ball. Kosnichke was attempting the modern day "virtual" tackle of running alongside the player with no intention of actually going anywhere near the player. If players did not "standoff" from tackling or even approaching the ball carrier they would have had many instances of being aware of a shepherder or tackler coming towards them and would be aware and able to ride or avoid the bump.
Round 7 opens up on Friday night with the Saints taking on Geelong. The unsung big men of the Saints, players like Goddard and Troy Scharwze really impressed Digger last week and the Saints should be able to defeat the Cat's who are struggling. As an added incentive for the Saint's, veteran Robert Harvey, this week will break the club record for most games played. Saints' V Sinner's, Digger says Saints.
Saturdays game at the ‘G between Melbourne and Fremantle is the Breast Cancer Awareness game with women wearing a splash of pink getting free admission, however a donation would be appreciated. The only A.F.L. female goal umpire, Chelsea Roffey will wave her pink flags at this game and will be wearing a pink shirt. Boy, will she clash with the Docker's. Melbourne at home by 4 goals.
Richmond V Sydney at the Telstra rink should be a good one. The Tigers have shown a bit of form with big Matt Richardson getting better with age. Reigning premiers Sydney seem to be hitting their straps as well and Paul Williams will play his 300th game. Digger sees a close fought game with the Tigers coming out victors.
Hawthorns home game against the Brisbane Lions is being played at Carrara on the Gold Coast which seems to be actually a home game for the Lions. Spectators are advised to check out the space from the goals to the fence and consider Diggers post about playing on after a behind has been scored of a previous submission. Brisbane to bounce back after a horrible week and sneak in.
The top of the table clash in the west sees the Weagles taking on the Magpies of Collingwood. The ‘woods have indicated that veteran star player Nathan Buckley may not travel and will have a rest. That's confidence. In Digger's view slightly misguided confidence. With Chris Judd in great form and the likely return of Ben Cousins the Weagles should win and win comfortably.
Mr. Smug's team the Port Power host the Western Bulldogs in Adelaide. The Bulldogs have gone off the boil in the past couple of weeks and have a dearth of big men through injury. This is a make or break game for the Power but old, tired legs are their problem. The speed of the doggies will be crucial and after a tight game until three quarter time the pups will run away with it in the last quarter.
In what could possibly be a nil all draw, Carlton takes on Essendon at the MCG on Mother's day. The two elder statesmen, Dennis Pagan and Kevin Sheedy, go into battle as the coaches with both sides needing a win. Essendon have been stiff this year while the Blues have looked very ordinary. The Bombers in this one.
The Kangaroos meet Adelaide at the rink on Sunday and while the Ravens are traveling very nicely the ‘roos cannot be completely written off. In fact Digger is doing a giraffe this week and going for the ‘roos. Cannot think why but just a gut feel. Maybe tired Thommo can do it again.
