2007 round 13

Welcome to...
Welcome to...

It was going to be Mark Thomson, it was going to be Chris Connelly, it was going to be Dean Laidley, but in the end it was Melbourne coach Neal Daniher who is the first coach to fall on his sword and be sacked, pushed, resigned or ousted from his position in season 2007.  last Friday afternoon he was safe for the season and then on Friday night Richmond gave an absolute shellacking to Melbourne and an immediate in club witch hunt begun.

  • Monday - The “review” of coaching positions would be completed by the end of July.
  • Tuesday – Rumors fly that Daniher would be sacked by seasons end.
  • Wednesday – Daniher resigns, effective August, in an eloquent speech.
  • Thursday – Daniher will coach his final match this Friday night and be replaced by caretaker coach Mark Riley.

A week certainly is a long time in football.

In last weeks game against Richmond the Demons had kicked 2 goals 4 behinds as the Tigers ran away to a commanding lead.  This continued in the second half with Matthew Richardson leading the way and although he did have a real “Richo” night hitting the post 4 time in kicking 3 goals 6 behinds, he was unstoppable.  Son of Michael, Shane Tuck played a blinder for the tiges as Richmond won by 49 points to record their first win of the season.

Nathan Brown did play on Nathan Brown but not for long as Nathan Brown in his return to senior football ran rings around Nathan Brown.

Collingwood traveled to Sydney, and no, they were not looking for Jose the didgeridoo player, to take on the so far meager Sydney Swan team.  Sydney managed only 1 goal in each of the first, second and third quarters while the hot ‘pies were traveling nicely.  Dale Thomas was on fire for Collingwood in kicking 4 goals and he was fully supported by Anthony Rocca with 3.  Captain Kirk was serviceable for the Swans but had no mates and now it looks like big Bazza Hall will be out from 1 week or maybe the rest of the season.  The ‘Pies should have one by a lot more but will be happy with the 19 point win.

How do you pick a winner in this competition.  St. Kilda down and out traveled to the Western Australia to take on the famed West Coast in a game the Weagles were long odds on to win.  But emotion is a wonderful thing and with Saint veteran Robert Harvey playing his 350th game with club his team mates lifted and ran out to a 37 point half time lead.  They extended this before a belated Weagle comeback saw the Saints finally win the game by 23 points.  Justin Koschitzke slotted 4 majors (and then did the hammy next day at training), Nick Dal Santo back to his brilliant best and Harvey was serviceable.  Dean “Big” Cox toiled manfully for the West Coast.

LETTER OF THE WEEK

Jimmy from Phu Quoc writes,

Robert Harvey had three handballs in 5 seconds and then the Saints turned the ball over, West Coast go long and kick a goal.  Why don’t they just fucking kick it!  Digger please explain.

Jimmy

Hey Jimmy,

Good point.  If you do not have the faith in your team mates ability to compete for the ball and these players include Koschitzke, Riewoldt and normally Gehrig you are in big trouble.  However they did win the game.  The more you handle it the more chance you have to turn it over.  I suggest that all spectators join the call and shout “kick the fuckin’ thing long”

Digger is under the pump to meet CF’s dead line and not for anyone will he hold the presses even in these electronic days!  Time and tide ……….

Friday night.  Essendon V Melbourne – Telstra Dome.  Emotions to rule again with the coach in his last game and the players knowing that they were major contributors is his downfall will pull it together for the Reverend.  Melbourne by 3 goals.

Saturday Arvo.  Geelong V Sydney – Skilled Stadium.  Although the Geelong team is due for a loss Digger cannot sea the disappointing Sydney team inflicting one this week.  Probably without Barry Hall and the overall Geelong  Wet, windy conditions are tipped so it will be a slog.  The Geelong team by 3 goals. home ground advantage should see the pussies continue on their winning ways.

Saturday Arvo.  Fremantle V Carlton – Sublaco.  Chris Connelly has been told that if the mentals do not make the finals this year he will be looking for a job (early tip he will coach Melbourne next year).  Aaron Sandilands is doubtful but this will make no difference.  Emotion again as the mental players will show some gumption for the coach.  Fremantle to win by 3 goals.

Saturday Night – Brisbane V Port Adelaide – The ‘Gabba.  A ho hum sort of affair with the Power playing the better football.  Never under estimate emotion in a game of footy and this time it is coach of Brisbane Leigh Matthews  Mr. Smug appears like he could not care less about his job.  The over riding factor in this game will be the home ground advantage to the Lions who should win by 3 goals. under the pump.

Saturday Night – St. Kilda V Richmond – Telstra Dome.  Both these teams had upset wins last round and who will have the biggest emotional let down.  The Saints have less motivation this week than last while the Tigers cannot win for the first time a second time.  St. Kilda by three goals.

Sunday Lunchtime – Adelaide V West Coast – AAMI Stadium.  Can the West Coast win away from the confines of the WACA?  Can the West Coast win without gun Chris Judd.  The West Coast are a very emotional team especially when on the tabs while the Ravens are perhaps the least emotional team going round.  The key is the Ravens getting a big return on the score board from Scott Welsh and if so the Ravens will win by 3 goals.

Sunday Arvo – Kangaroos V Western Bulldogs – MCG.  With Shinboner of the Century, Glenn Archer playing his 300th game for the North Melbourne/Kangaroos all the emotion will be with the Kangaroos and given their insipid performance against the Ravens they boys will be keen to make amends.  The Kangaroos by 3 goals.

Sunday twilight zone – Collingwood V Hawthorn – Telstra Dome.  No emotions here as the two hard teams of the competition meet.  Hawthorn to keep rolling along and to win by 3 goals.

That is all for Digger this week and remember to keep your emotions in control and your eyes on the three goals,

  1. Kick it long
  2. Compete for the ball
  3. Kick a winning score
