2007 Grand Final review
October, 04th 2007 03:47 AM

The 2007 AFL Grand Final is over and it was victory to the Geelong team.  "We are Geelong, the greatest team of all" has echoed around the world and no more so than in Ho Chi Minh City were a brilliant rap version was heard.

Geelong bounced out of the blocks and there were a couple of individual pieces of brilliance.  Gary Ablett's spoil and goal from a wayward Port kick out and the Brad Ottens chase and tackle stood out to Digger.  There was a touch of nervousness among Geelong supporters even though the Cats led by 23 points at the first change.  The 5 goals 7 behinds that Geelong kicked should have been 8 goals 4 behinds as easy shots were missed.  Memories of previous Grand Final first quarters surfaced and visions of games lost to inaccurate starts came into view.

However those bad thoughts were snuffed out when Geelong banged on 6 second quarter goals to 2 and the boys from down the highway looked home at the long break.  5 of those 6 goals were kicked in the first 12 minutes of the quarter.  Matthew Scarlett continually ran forward from the backline and Paul Chapman and Steve Johnson were running riot up forward.

It was more of the same in the second half with Geelong continuing to dominate.  Cam Mooney notched 5 goals and Nathan Ablett was solid with 3.  Port Adelaide's Kane Cornes and Dominic Cassisi tagged Jimmy Bartel and Ablett Jr., respectively and did quite a tidy job.  Add brother Chad to the list (but with no goose stepping) plus Peter Burgoyne and you have the Port Adelaide contributors.

Geelong did not have a bad player and Scarlett, Ottens, Chapman, Mooney and Steven King could all of won the Norm Smith Medal which went to Johnson as the best player on the ground.

Final score:  Geelong 24.19.163 to Port Adelaide 6.8.44

And it was in the numbers there as well,

63 the last year Geelong won the flag and 44 the number of years between flags.  The number 24 (Geelong goals) is/was worn by young Mark Blake who was dropped from the team for the big one.

And Geelong continues to party and party.

Take a bow now Wozza you goose.

LETTER OF THE WEEK

The following was sent to Digger from an un named Crow supporter.

Dear Digger,

Port Powder suck, they have the power to lose, the power to freeze, in true Port Adelaide tradition, etc., etc.,

Tartin Marum

Well Tartin, I suppose that Power and Crows supporters will never get on.

Digger

In sad news this week we learned of the passing of former West Coast great and two time all Australian, Chris Mainwaring.  In another drug related episode in the west, Chris was allegedly intoxicated with cannabis and ecstasy when he had a seizure, collapsed and died on the way to hospital.  Vale Chris Mainwaring.

Do not worry dear reader, Digger will continue with his reports each week throughout the off season and try to entertain you.

That is all for the 2007 and just one more time, "We are the Geelong, the greatest team of all, we are Geelong always on the ball..........."
